National Men’s Health Month – What Men Need to Know

June is National Men’s Health Month, and it’s a great time for guys to take stock of their health. There are a lot of things that men can do to improve their health, and it’s important to be aware of them. Here are some things that men need to know about their health.

1. Get regular checkups.

One of the best things that men can do for their health is to get regular checkups. Many health problems can be caught early if men get regular checkups. It’s important to see a doctor on a regular basis, even if you feel healthy.

2. Eat a healthy diet.

Another important thing that men can do for their health is to eat a healthy diet. Eating healthy foods can help men stay at a healthy weight, and it can also help reduce the risk of many health problems. Men should eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. They should also limit their intake of saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol.

3. Get regular exercise.

Regular exercise is another important part of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise can help men stay at a healthy weight, and it can also reduce the risk of many health problems. Men should get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity most days of the week. Examples of moderate-intensity activities include walking, biking, and swimming.

4. Don’t smoke.

Smoking is one of the worst things that men can do for their health. Smoking increases the risk of many health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and cancer. If you smoke, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health. There are many resources available to help smokers quit, so there’s no excuse not to quit.

5. Limit your alcohol intake.

Drinking alcohol in moderation can be part of a healthy lifestyle. However, drinking too much alcohol can be harmful to your health. Men should limit their alcohol intake to two drinks per day. A drink is defined as one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce shot of liquor.

6. Take care of your mental health.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Men should make sure to take care of their mental health. This can include getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and managing stress. If you are feeling down or having trouble coping, don’t be afraid to seek help from a mental health professional.

7. Know your family history.

Many health problems run in families. It’s important to know your family history so you can be aware of the health problems that you may be at risk for. If you have a family history of a certain health problem, you may need to be extra vigilant about getting screenings or taking steps to prevent the problem.

8. Keep your doctor appointments.

If you have a chronic health condition, it’s important to keep your doctor appointments. This can help you stay on top of your condition and catch any problems early. Don’t miss your appointments, and make sure to keep your doctor up to date on any changes in your health.

– We’re back with a Problem
Solvers Health Alert. June is national men’s health month and a recent study found two thirds of men. Two out of three, think that they are naturally healthier than other people. The. Reality is they’re not,
most likely they’re not. So joining me now to talk about the things. Men need to keep in mind, this
month and really every month, Dr. Keri Thurmon over at Denver health. Dr. Thurmon, thanks so much for
being here, I appreciate it., -, Thank, you.
– I know men don’t like to talk about all these things, but it’s really important
to bring them. Up. I’ve been having many
conversations with my father about this,, prostate cancer.. How often do men get it, when do they need to get checked, and what is getting checked. Like?, -, Yeah,, so prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men.. We use a blood test, called
prosthetic specific antigen to screen- – PSA,, yup
-, PSA,, exactly. And. We recommend starting at
age 55 to get screened, yearly. If, you have risk factors,
meaning, a family, member,, brother or father, had prostate cancer or you’re African American,. We recommend starting screening at age, 40., -, Okay,, good information, there. Moving on to LUT, lower
urinary tract symptoms.. What are the common ones? What. Do guys need to know about this?, – Yeah,, so lower urinary tract symptoms are extremely common. Typically. It’s due to benign
prostatic hyperplasia. So again, that prostate
getting in the way. – [Reporter], Okay., – Common symptoms are weak, urinary, stream, urinary urgency, frequency,
getting up at night to urinate, and incomplete bladder emptying. – Is this a symptom that older men have or younger men as well? – Yeah,. So men can start
having these symptoms as early as age, 50. So about a quarter of 50 year olds start having these symptoms and it only increases as you age. So by the time you’re 70, you have a 70% chance. Of
Having these symptoms. – Okay, good important
information to keep in mind. Testicular cancer, I think
this is one that I’ve seen in, unfortunately with younger men too,. So what do guys need to do for this? And at what age should
they start being concerned about just the idea of it? – Yeah,? So as early as men
start showering on their own, as teenagers,, they can do self exams,. This can be done in the shower or bath, and we recommend monthly and
at your yearly appointment with your doctor, and it’s
just, an easy self exam to look for nodules or hard lumps., – And. This can happen in guys in their twenties
basically, unfortunately. -, Absolutely,, yes.
-, Okay, and really quickly, and I. Think I saw a stat, when you talk about erectile, dysfunction. Doctors, say it needs to be
normalized, and they’re what?: 30 million men.
– Yes. – In America, who kind
of struggle with this. -, Yes,, erectile, dysfunction
is, extremely common. It’s. Due to a lot of lifestyle factors, you know,, we eat a lot
of, sugary, fatty foods,. We start having coronary
artery disease earlier and that can affect the
blood flow to the penis. And. So we really want to
talk about this with men and we want their quality
of life to be wonderful., – Is that something a man can talk with his,, say his primary
care doctor about, or he needs to go, see a specialist like urologist as you yourself., – Yeah,. He can absolutely talk to his primary care about this.. There are lifestyle
modifications, sex, therapy, medications such as Viagra or Cialis,, and then also there’s surgeries. – Okay,, all right, Dr. Keri
Thurmon over at Denver, health. I know we rushed through this, but very important
information,. I appreciate it. -, Thank you.
