Erectile Dysfunction & Treatment Options Available at UVA
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a man’s inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It’s also known as impotence.
Many men experience it at some point in their lives, and the causes can range from stress to side effects of medication. It often improves with treatment.
At UVA, we offer several treatment options for erectile dysfunction, including:
- Oral medications – These can be taken before sexual activity to improve blood flow to the penis. They include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn).
- Alprostadil – This medication can be injected into the penis or inserted as a pellet through the urethra. It increases blood flow to the penis to produce an erection.
- Penile implants – This is a surgical option for men who do not respond to other treatments. A surgeon inserts a device into the penis that can cause an erection.
If you’re experiencing ED, our team of specialists will work with you to find the cause and the best treatment option for you.
