Erectile Dysfunction: The Hidden Side Effect of Covid-19

Have you or someone you know been struggling with erectile dysfunction since contracting Covid-19? Our new article explores this emerging issue and offers some potential solutions. Click here to read now.

Erectile Dysfunction Post-Covid Infection

The sexual problems caused by the coronavirus may not be as well-known as the respiratory difficulties or the economic devastation, but they are just as real and just as significant. For men, one of the most worrisome sexual problems is erectile dysfunction (ED).

While the link between ED and Covid-19 is still being studied, there is some evidence that the virus can cause damage to the blood vessels and nerves that are essential for achieving and maintaining an erection. In addition, the stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic can also lead to ED.

If you are struggling with ED, you are not alone. Here are some things you should know about this problem, as well as some tips for dealing with it.

What is ED?

ED is the inability to get or keep an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. It can happen at any age, but it is more common in older men. ED is not a natural part of aging. It can be the result of physical or psychological problems.

Physical causes of ED include:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Tobacco use
  • Alcoholism
  • Drug abuse

Psychological causes of ED include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Relationship problems

What are the symptoms of ED?

The primary symptom of ED is the inability to get or keep an erection. This can happen at any age, but it is more common in older men. Other symptoms include:

  • Reduced sexual desire
  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Trouble keeping an erection
  • Inability to reach orgasm
  • Reduced semen production

How is ED diagnosed?

ED is usually diagnosed by a physical exam and a medical history. Your doctor may also order blood tests to check for underlying medical conditions. You may also need to undergo a psychological evaluation to rule out psychological causes of ED.

How is ED treated?

Treatment for ED will vary depending on the underlying cause. If the cause is physical, treatment may involve lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, quitting smoking, and reducing stress. If the cause is psychological, treatment may involve counseling or therapy. In some cases, medication may be necessary. There are also several effective treatments for ED, such as:

  • Oral medications, such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra)
  • Injections into the penis
Today I am discussing Erectile Dysfunction (commonly caused ED) as part of the list of Long Covid symptoms. Please see a doctor or a speCialist called a urologist if you have any symptoms related to the male sexual & reproductive organs during acute COVID infection or persistence post recovery. And be sure to tell the doctor about your history of COVID infection. 6/2/2022

Hello is dr rhonda johnson today is thursday june 2nd 2022. Today, I’m talking about erectile dysfunction, commonly known as ed as a complication of covent infection and part of the list of symptoms of long Covid. But I want to talk first about this micro level. What causes this well? It has to do with that virus and the receptor that the virus attaches to the cell. It’s highly present present in the cells of the penis and the testicles, so the virus can attach to the cells in the penis and the testicles and cause them to be infected, which causes inflammation and dysfunction. So research has also shown that the disruption of the blood flow because of the inflammation of the endothelial cells, those cells that line the blood vessels, can cause disrupted blood flow, which can lead to changes in the nerve, conduction and muscle contraction and the all of those functions have to do with erectile functionality. So research has also shown that Covid infection can reduce the amount of the male hormone testosterone produced in one study. Folks, testosterone deficiency was found in 74 percent of men with Covid, so there’s testosterone dysfunction. There can be direct infection of the blood vessels, reducing the blood flow, altering nerve, conduction and inflammation, and there can be testicular damage that results from high fever secondary inflammation and hyper immune responses. So that’s a lot so how common is Covid related male reproductive problems? Well, according to some experts, anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of men with acute Covid infection, develop inflammation of one or both testis or they can have inflammation of other parts of the male reproductive organs. Now, if you’re, a man who has other coexisting conditions that predispose to erectile dysfunction such as obesity or high blood pressure or diabetes, circulatory disease or neurological conditions, you may experience higher rates of ed following Covid infection. I’m sure you want to know how long this lasts. While experts say that it can be either short-term or long-term, which basically means nobody really knows now. Does this cause male fertility issues again, experts don’t know yet, but time will tell now. Experts do recommend getting the Covid 19 vaccine to lower your risk of ed as a side effect. So closing erectile dysfunction is part of the list of lankovitz symptoms. Please see a doctor or a speCialist called a urologist if you have any symptoms related to the male sexual and reproductive organs during acute Covid infection or pers that persist after you recover, and then you got to be sure to tell the doctor about your history of Covid infection. When you see the doctor for your erectile dysfunction, that’s my message today as always: stay safe out there and please be careful.

What users commented:

Dr Rhonda Johnson, I had Covid 19 back in September 2020 it was very severe i was bed ridden for 5 weeks, Bad cough, Viral infection couldnt keep food down, Cold sweats at night, Leaving the sheets soaked in sweat. When i gradually recovered in 0ctober 2020, My Erectile dysfunction is severe as i was fairly healthy before exercising 5 days a week. What are the best solutions for severe Ed? I have changed my diet to much more healthier.
