Erectile Dysfunction – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Erectile dysfunction, also known as ED or impotence, is the inability to attain or maintain an erection of the penis adequate for the sexual satisfaction of both partners. It can be devastating to the self-esteem of a man and cause significant stress to the relationship. There are many causes of erectile dysfunction, both physical and psychological. These include heart disease, diabetes, neurological problems such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease, hormonal imbalances, surgery or trauma, and even certain medications.
Most often, erectile dysfunction is a physical problem related to blood flow and circulation. These issues can be caused by atherosclerosis, diabetes, neurological problems, or prostate surgery. In some cases, however, erectile dysfunction may be a symptom of a more serious underlying condition such as heart disease, low testosterone, or depression.
There are many effective treatments for erectile dysfunction, including lifestyle changes, psychological counseling, medications, vacuum devices, and surgery. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most men with erectile dysfunction can experience improved sexual function.
