Erectile dysfunction is common in men – basically, it’s the inability to achieve and maintain an erection for a specific period of time.

Erectile dysfunction can affect young men in their teens and 20’s and all ages, really.

There are several causes for this – ranging from harmless to life threatening.

Here are the top 6 causes of erectile dysfunction.

1. Anxiousness – if a guy is feeling anxious, the hormones released will prevent an erection from happening.

2. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a sedentary lifestyle – if a guy sits around too much, blood actually pools in the pelvic area resulting in stale, unfresh blood that doesn’t have the nutrients to help a guy get an erection. Studies show that guys with erectile dysfunction who sit around and don’t exercise, are able to decrease their erectile dysfunction with regular exercise.

3. Smoking – we all know it’s bad for you, but the chemical in cigarettes that causes addiction (nicotine) is a potent blood vessel constrictor (meaning it cuts off the blood supply) and the penis can’t work properly if this is going on!

4. Alcohol – we all know the story of the guy who had to much to drink and couldn’t get it up – there’s no doubt short term, excessive alcohol ingestion has this effect. But if you drink too much on and ongoing basis, too much alcohol can deplete certain nutrients (vitamin B12) that in turn leads to nervous system damage – and ongoing erectile dysfunction.

5. Heart Disease – this is the big one. If a man age 40 and over is struggling with erectile dysfunction, then he needs to be worked up for heart disease. While we call it “heart disease” that disease process can occur in the blood vessels throughout the body – and wee know that heart disease, more properly termed ‘cardiovascular disease’ can affect the vessels of the penis and be an early warning sign for heart disease.

6. Poor diet – we need specific food nutrients (the enzymes arginine and citrulline) to make something called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is the chemical that opens and closes our blood vessels. This process needs to happen very efficiently in the genitals, otherwise erectile dysfunction is the result.

A diet poor in healthy foods (fruits, vegetables and lean, fresh proteins) can leave you unable to produce adequate amounts of nitric oxide and along with some other compromise of the genital area (those listed above), poor diet can contribute to erectile dysfunction.

Taking steps to rule out heart disease, limit alcohol, improve diet, get more exercise and stoping smoking are important ways to fix erectile dysfunction, naturally.

Hey guys, I’m dr jason barker with the natural athletes clinic and in honor of men’s health awareness month. I want to talk about an important men’s health issue that doesn’t get talked about enough and that is erectile dysfunction. So what is erectile dysfunction? It’s an inability of a guy to achieve and maintain an erection for a specified amount of time. This affects men of all ages, young men, all the way up to old men and there’s a lot of different causes for it, so the first main cause is being anxious or being nervous. So this happens to a lot of guys, of course, when we’re stressed out you’re making a lot of stress hormones, the adrenaline hormones epinephrine. These hormones have a very distinct effect of constricting blood vessels, and so when the blood vessels are constricted in the genitalia, things are not going to work. Okay, so that’s the first major cause. Second, one is being sedentary or lack of exercise. So when we’re sedentary and we’re sitting around a lot that blood despite it, is being pumped throughout your body, of course, but that blood can kind of pool and stagnate in the pelvic area and there’s not necessarily a fresh blood supply there, all the time that a man needs in order to be able to achieve that erection as needed on demand, so to speak so by getting some exercise. There’s good studies that show that sedentary men who started on a regular exercise program and by the way this is just walking about 30 minutes a day. They were able to nearly reverse the course of that erectile dysfunction. So getting that exercise is super important, of course, for getting healthy blood flow throughout the body now the next one. Next major cause is smoking. Okay, so smoking is, of course, goes without saying, not very healthy for you, but that chemical, nicotine that’s found in cigarettes, constricts those blood vessels as well. It’s very it’s a very potent blood vessel constrictor and just one cigarette the effects of that can last for hours and hours and hours. So if you’re experiencing erectile dysfunction, losing the cigarettes is a good place to start all right. Next major cause of erectile dysfunction is alcohol ingestion. So we’ve all heard about the guy who’s been at the bar had too much to drink, attempted an amorous pursuit and was unsuccessful because things were not working. Now, that’s a very common acute result of too much alcohol ingestion, but if a guy is drinking too much alcohol over a long period of time or chronically, this can also lead to damage in the nervous system, because when you drink too much alcohol you’re depleting your body’s vitamin b12 stores, we need vitamin b12 for a healthy functioning nervous system. So, of course the genitalia is very intricately linked to the nervous system. So if your nervous system is damaged from inadequate amounts of b12, then you are going to suffer from erectile dysfunction, so lowering alcohol intake or even getting rid of it if you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, is a good step in the right direction. Now the next big issue is heart disease, so in older guys, this is something we worry about more so than in younger men, of course, but erectile dysfunction can be an early warning sign of heart disease, and that is because, despite the fact that we call it heart disease or cardiovascular disease or by the process of those blood vessels getting occluded or blocked from the disease process, that isn’t just happening in the heart, it can happen throughout the blood vessels of the body and so in our genitalia. Of course, we have very small fine, a very intricate detailed network of blood vessels and that cardiovascular disease process can start to affect those smaller vessels first, so in men over 40 or so who come in with erectile dysfunction. We’re really more concerned about heart disease with these guys, so they need a complete screening. So now, if you go off to the doctor- and you complain about erectile dysfunction, the answer is not to get the little blue pill. Okay, that is just a band-aid on a potentially serious problems. So this needs to be part of your work up now younger guys under 40s, or so we don’t necessarily start thinking about heart disease as the first cause of erectile dysfunction, usually in younger men. Erectile dysfunction is more attributed to like that anxiety that I talked about now. The last big one is, of course, diet. So if a man is eating a lot of processed stuff or fatty, stuff or kind of lifeless dead food, he is not going to be getting enough of the proper nutrients that make the blood vessels constrict and dilate as they need to in our genitalia, so that you can have an erection and maintain it. So I’m talking about the chemical, nitric oxide, it’s our body’s chemical that opens those blood vessels and closes them, and it works very, very rapidly. So good examples of this are, of course, if you’re interested in somebody or something and things come to attention how quickly that can happen, or maybe a better example is when you stand up from a chair really quickly that blood pressure those vessels constrict. So the pressure stays up so that you don’t get dizzy and pass out these. That process happens throughout the body, but definitely we’re very dependent on that nitric oxide. We get nitric oxide from the amino acids, citrulline and arginine they’re found in healthy lean meats, they’re also found in a lot of fruits and vegetables. So of course increasing this in our diet and also there’s good studies where we’ve changed the man’s diet to a more healthy diet and we’ve been able to reduce the incidence and severity of that erectile dysfunction. So, and if that is something that you’re working on, we also use nitric oxide support.
